Fire on the Mountain

Prescribed Fire Awareness Week will be February 7-13, 2010. Activities, events, demonstrations, and displays will occur statewide by multiple agencies and organizations to recognize the importance of prescribed fire to North Carolina's fire dependent ecosystems, as a valuable wildlife and forest management tool, and as an effective technique for reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfire. February 13, 2010: 'Fire on the Mountain'. Program will be presented by Wildlife Biologist/Forester Dean Simon at 1:00 PM at the N. C. Bird House Basics

3 Hours

Come help us prepare for spring by building a birdhouse to take home, and learn some basics about birds and bird habitat requirements while you’re at it. All materials provided. For ages 7 and up. Ages 7 and up. Limited to 12 families with one birdhouse per family. February 6, 2010

Hunter Education Course

10 Hours

This course meets 3 consecutive nights Tues., Wed., & Thurs., from 6 pm to 9:30 pm for 10 contact hours. All unlicensed sportsmen and women must successfully complete a hunter education course before they can hunt in North Carolina or purchase a hunting license. This course covers hunter responsibility, wildlife conservation and management, firearms, wildlife identification, survival and first aid, specialty hunting and tree stand safety. The course is accepted for certification purposes in every state and province in North America. Please bring a pencil or pen to class. There is no minimum age requirement. March 9-11, Aug.17-19, Oct. 19-21, 2010.

Primitive Outdoor Skills

3 Hours

Do you think you could survive if you were lost in the woods with only a few essential items? Together with the the Pisgah Center staff learn the basics of wilderness survival. Topicswill include building a fire, constructing a shelter, and finding food. March 13, 2010. Ages 16 and up.

Nature Photography for the Beginner

4 Hours

Are you disappointed in the quality of your outdoor photographs? This program teaches the basics of nature photography including how to use general equipment and effective composition. Instructors also cover subjects from landscapes and wildlife to macro photography. Bring your camera—digital or film. Participants spend time in the field. Ages 12 and up. March 27, June 10, July 17, August 24, 2010.

Backyard Bird Photography

4 Hours

Spring in the mountains is a wonderful time to photograph our feathered friends. This program, designed for the advanced beginner, focuses on learning not only about techniques for photographing birds, but also on the identification of these photogenic, but challenging subjects. A tripod and a camera capable of manual control are suggested. Time will be spent in the field. Limited to 10 participants. Ages 12 and up. April 17, 2010.

Advanced Close Up Photography-Wildflowers

4 Hours

This program, designed for advanced beginners who have already taken the Pisgah Center’s “Close-up Nature Photography” class (or those with equivalent experience), will focus on how to photograph our forests’ many and varied wildflower species. We will briefly review some close up photography methods and equipment and then head into the field to photograph. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a camera – digital or film. A tripod and a camera capable of manual control are suggested. Ages 12 and up. April 22, 2010.

Beaver Adventure

Join PCWE staff for an exciting morning as we explore the very industrious world of the beaver! We will learn about this exciting critter as we take a short hike to a local, active beaver pond! Ages 7 and up. May 1, 2010

Gone Fishin' for Adults

3 Hours

9am to noon Getting ready for the grandchildren or other family members visiting this summer? Enjoy a relaxed morning learning the basics of fishing so you can take friends and family on a fishing outing this summer! Learn fishing skills, water safety, and fishing regulations. Equipment provided. We will meet at Lake Imaging parking area in DuPont State Forest and enjoy a short hike to the lake. For Adults. May 19 2010.

Waterfall Ecosystem Photography

4 Hours

While waterfalls provide beautiful photographic subjects, they can be very challenging to capture on film. This program, designed for the advanced beginner who would like to take their moving water photography to the next level, will include a drive to a nearby waterfall (all children should be accompanied by an adult; we will each be driving ourselves the short distance to the falls). Wear sturdy shoes and bring a camera. While not absolutely necessary a tripod and camera capable of manual control are suggested in order to allow you to experiment with some advanced techniques. Limited to 10 participants. Ages 12 and up. May 22, & October 9, 2010

Enjoy a relaxed morning of fishing on a local lake. Learn fishing skills, water safety, and fishing regulations. Equipment provided. Families will meet at Lake Imaging parking area in DuPont State Forest and enjoy a short hike to the lake. Call PCWE for directions 877-4423. You may register for one “Gone Fishin’” program per summer. Limited to 25 participants. Ages 6-12. June 9, 2010. 8am until 11am.

3 Hours

Enjoy a relaxed morning of fishing on a local lake in Dupont State Forest. Learn fishing skills, water safety, and fishing regulations. Equipment provided. Families will meet at Buck Forest parking area and enjoy a hayride to the lake. Call PCWE for directions 877-4423. You may register for one “Gone Fishin’” program per summer. Limited to 25 participants. Ages 6-12. June 12, or July 24, August 21, 2010.

A Week in the Water

3 Hours daily

This program meets 5 consecutive days Monday - Friday 9 am to noon June 14- June 18, 2010. Or Monday - Friday 9 am to noon July 12 - July 16, 2010. Young people join us for a weeklong series of hands-on classes that focus on the art and skill of fly-fishing. Participants learn about equipment, knots, casting techniques and more. Spend the last two days of the week fishing on the river. Ages 8-15.

Close Up Nature Photography

4 Hours

Some of the most fascinating nature photographs can be created in your own backyard – just think small. This program, designed for the advanced beginner, focuses on equipment and techniques that can help you become more aware of the fascinating world of tiny plants and animals. You’ll also learn how to capture them in an image. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a camera – digital or film. A tripod and a camera capable of manual control are suggested. Time is spent in the field experimenting with various techniques and subjects. Ages 12 and up. June 19, & July 22, 2010.

10 am - noon Come join PCWE staff as we learn about one of N.C.’s most fascinating amphibians! Learn to identify local species of salamanders and their habitat requirements, and why they are so important to our ecosystems! Ages 8 and up. June 19, 2010

BB Gun Shooting Range

2 Hours

10 am - noon Join our experienced PCWE staff as we learn about fire arm safety and shooting. This program will focus on firearm safety as participants learn about different types of fire arms and how to properly handle them, and then have the opportunity to practice their shooting skills on an outside B.B. gun range! Ages 8-15. June 24, 2010.

Geocaching for Wildlife

3 Hours

What do satellites, hidden treasures and animals have to do with one another? Come join the PCWE staff and learn about navigation, geocaching and wildlife while using a GPS unit! Equipment and materials are provided. Ages 8 and up. Limited to 20 participants. June 25, & August 14, 2010

Kid's Introduction to Archery

2 Hours

10 am- noon Try your hand at this popular sport. Archery is a significant part of our shooting and hunting heritage and can be enjoyed by boys and girls. Join PCWE staff for a hands-on, fun-filled afternoon. The program emphasizes safety as participants learn a sport that they can enjoy for the rest of their lives. Limited to 15 participants. Ages 8-16. June 26, & July 21, 2010

Stream Investigation

2 Hours

Come spend the morning with experienced PCWE staff as we explore the Davidson River looking for aquatic macro invertebrates! Based on what we find, we can determine the water quality of the river and will discuss how these little critters play such an important role in the ecosystem and to our beloved mountain trout! Ages 12 –adult. July 10, 2010

Introduction to Archery-Family Day

10 am- noon Bring your family and come spend the morning with experienced PCWE staff as we learn about archery! Topics covered will include: safety, variations in bows and arrows, and lots of time practice shooting at targets! Limited to 15 participants. Ages 8-adult. July 31, 2010

A Week in the Woods

3 Hours daily

This program meets 5 consecutive days Monday - Friday 9 am to noon August 2 - August 6, 2010. Young people join us for a weeklong series of hands-on classes that focus on the tradition of hunting. Participants learn about equipment, tracking, firearm and bow safety, and much more! Spend the last two days of the week on the B.B. gun and archery range! Ages 8-15.

National Hunting and Fishing Day Festival

10 am- 3 pm September 25, 2009Come help PCWE celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day! Hands-on activities for all ages will include: archery, BB gun shooting range, fly tying, and interactive kids’ hunt camp, and much more! September 25, 2010.

Come learn the basics of GPS and how you can use these skills for your next hunt. Topics include: marking your game, locating your tree stand, tracing your tracks, using interactive maps, and much more! Equipment and materials provided. Ages 12 and up. October 2, 2010.

Are you a novice hunter wanting to learn more about the different hunting opportunities North Carolina has to offer? Join this introductory program to help you feel more comfortable with regulations, equipment and safety concerns to guide you in your preparation for a hunt. Limited to 30 participants. For ages 8 and up. October 23, 2010.

Outdoor Skills-Outdoor Cooking

5 Hours

Whether in a camp setting or at home, you can learn how to prepare a tasty meal over an open wood fire or charcoal briquettes. Discover other novelty methods of cooking, as well. Participants help prepare and eat the food created in this class. Bring a lawn chair. Limited to 25 participants. Please do not register for this class if you have already taken it. Ages 12 and up. Hatchery Tour

2 Hours

Spend the morning with PCWE staff as we learn about the Bobby N. Setzer trout hatchery operations. We will explore how and why the trout are here and discuss the role N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s plays in fishing opportunities for anglers. As an extra treat, we will take a tour of the indoor fish rearing facilities! Ages 5 - Adult. December 18, 2010
